Method

SIMWOOD concentrates on five research themes: forest governance; forest ownership; forest management; forest functions; forest harvesting.

It carries out case studies in 14 model regions, which represent the main European forest types. Regional Learning Labs will be set up in each region to ensure stakeholder involvement.

Regional profiles will be developed and evaluated making use of the Regional Learning Labs for feedback and input. For each region, the project will develop a profile which includes:

  • Challenges: information about the region’s specific barriers and opportunities in wood mobilisation
  • Goals and strategies, and proposed measures/suitable initiatives
  • A proposed list of criteria and indicators for cross-regional comparison of wood mobilisation

The proposed solutions and measures will be tested. This information and analysis will then feed into the SIMWOOD Mobiliser, to create a unique knowledge base of innovative practices and technologies, existing collaborative initiatives and effective support programmes in the regions. The Mobiliser will include an expert system to evaluate the impact of up-scaling innovative solutions to the larger EU context.
