About Småland

Area: 29,400 km2
Population: 720,358
Forest area: 2.1 million ha
Private forests: 1.7 million ha
Private forest owners: 44,000
Forest type: Spruce and spruce-birch boreal forest; pine and pine-birch boreal forest

Specific situation

  • Great importance of processing of wood raw material.
  • 15% of Swedish wood harvesting is done in Småland, on 9% of Swedish forest area.
  • Sawmills and pulp industry are the main customers of roundwood (each 45%). 7% of roundwood is for fuel, 3% is left in the forest in form of tops.
  • High proportion of wood processing industries in the region, especially sawmills.
  • Main forest functions are wood products, hunting, fishing, other non-wood-forest products (berries, mushrooms), recreation and tourism.

Main challenges

  • Limited resources for recruitment, development of new products, as well as limited funding for research.
  • Forest biomass is not used sufficiently, lack of biomass for bioenergy.
  • Lack of adequate harvest methods and technologies for increased mobilisation of biomass from forest for bioenergy.
  • Increasing competition between users of woody biomass.
