Population: 720,358
Forest area: 2.1 million ha
Private forests: 1.7 million ha

Forest type: Spruce and spruce-birch boreal forest; pine and pine-birch boreal forest

Specific situation

Great importance of processing of wood raw material.
15% of Swedish wood harvesting is done in Småland, on 9% of Swedish forest area.
Sawmills and pulp industry are the main customers of roundwood (each 45%). 7% of roundwood is for fuel, 3% is left in the forest in form of tops.
High proportion of wood processing industries in the region, especially sawmills.
Main forest functions are wood products, hunting, fishing, other non-wood-forest products (berries, mushrooms), recreation and tourism.

Main challenges

Limited resources for recruitment, development of new products, as well as limited funding for research.
Forest biomass is not used sufficiently, lack of biomass for bioenergy.
Lack of adequate harvest methods and technologies for increased mobilisation of biomass from forest for bioenergy.
Increasing competition between users of woody biomass.
